Program Overview

International Mathematics Master (IMM-LUMS)

The Department of Mathematics at SBASSE is striving to become the premier institute to promote mathematics not only in the country but in the region. The International Mathematics Master (IMM-LUMS) is a premium graduate programme in mathematics with the mission to train young talented, gifted minds in Pakistan and the region. We envision that our graduates, through IMM-LUMS rigorous training, will secure top places for Ph.D. This programme emphasizes strengthening students' mathematical foundation to develop the necessary critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to excel in research careers. The programme elements include recruitment of top talent, a two-year program that combines coursework and research, and the involvement of the international math community through visiting professorships and joint research projects. This competitively ambitious program requires an exclusive time commitment and dedicated studies from all the admitted students to meet the high standard of training.

Salient features of the International Mathematics Master (IMM-LUMS) programme

The International Mathematics Master (IMM-LUMS) Programme at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) is a two-year Programme. It is a prestigious programme based on pragmatics with the following standout features:

Master’s Thesis:

How To Plan:

The mathematics department at SBASSE-LUMS has gained prominence for high-quality teaching, research, and activities related to the mathematical research and outreach it conducts. The department has over 12 faculty members working in diverse areas of pure, applied, and computational mathematics who provide rigorous training to our students. Standard courses also include instruction on applications and cutting-edge mathematical research. The department's research environment is enhanced by various seminars held virtually/physically every week, including the John Conway Spirited Seminar Series. Over the years, the department has been hosting regular workshops and thematic research schools. In recognition of the department’s ongoing endeavors, the European Mathematical Society (EMS) has awarded it the status of an Emerging Regional Center of Excellence (ERCE). As an ERCE bearer, the department has been organizing various activities to create opportunities for collaboration between students and researchers.

Another honor received by the mathematics department is its selection as an ICTP’s Affiliated Center by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). As an ICTP's Affiliated Centre, the department hosts the prestigious International Mathematics Master program. This two-year program recruits top talent offers solid coursework and research and incorporates the involvement of the international math community through visiting professorships and joint research supervision. The Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA) France selected the mathematics department at SBASSE-LUMS to host CIMPA Research School on Algebraic and Combinatorial Methods in Geometry in March 2022. Moreover, the department has been organizing several in-house outreach activities like LUMS Math Circles to popularize mathematics among school kids.
