How did you know about IMM Pakistan?

When I was doing my Bachelor's program. I heard from my friend about this program because he knows Professor Sarfraz. He gave me information about the program and advised me to apply for it.

Why did you decide to apply for it?

A friend of mine told me that attending this master is very different from attending any other master in Pakistan since in his opinion professors were very cooperative with their students and sincerely interested in training them. I was fascinated by this and so I decided to apply. After having attended the program, I think that this is true: when you raise your hand and ask a question during an IMM lecture, professors seem to appreciate it. The most important thing, I wanted to go abroad for my further studies, and I understood that it would be a good platform for me to be able to do it.

Curiosity is valued in this program! Which course did you enjoy the most?

Differential geometry and complex analysis.

Why?

Actually, I think that the professors were really interested. They developed the student's interest in their subject. Their teaching method was so interesting and students enjoy their class. My final IMM thesis was in complex analysis.

What was it about?

It was about the analytical continuation of holomorphic functions.

Can you explain the concept in a few words?

My point was to study the analytical continuation of the holomorphic functions. And I also gave some examples of real functions whose analytical continuation is not unique, while the analytical continuation of holomorphic functions is unique.

It seems very interesting. And how did you discover the master at Università di Calabria?

Through the IMM webpage. You know, on the page there is information about open Ph.D. positions and master programs… Actually, in that period I started to be interested in Data Science and Machine Learning, which is a much more applied field of mathematics, and I decided to satisfy this curiosity. That’s why I applied for the Master at University of Calabria: here I am studying applied mathematics.

Which subjects are you studying exactly?

I’m studying functional and numerical analysis, ring theory, and quantum mechanics. At this moment I am quite free and I am trying to learn some software related to my thesis which I will write in the 4th semester.

And what about your final thesis?

I will focus on machine learning. In order to work on my thesis, I am going to the University of Bergen, Norway, for the last semester of my master's.

And after that? What are you planning to do?

I am planning to apply for some Ph.D. positions in Denmark, and Norway. There are a few places I have already thought about. I am also looking for some universities in Italy that are doing projects on machine learning and data science.

Would you like to go back to Pakistan someday?

I think that if you are going forward, you have to just go forward without looking back. If I get a good job in Europe, I will stay here. Of course, I cannot forget my country and I will pay back to my country.
