I obtained an MSc in Mathematics at the University of Bristol before commencing a PhD in ergodic theory at the University of Exeter under the supervision of Dalia Terhesiu and Mark Holland.

My PhD. is in the field of ergodic theory and dynamical systems. Often even simple dynamical systems exhibit chaotic properties making their behaviour difficult to predict either computationally or analytically. I am particularly fascinated by how methods derived for classical probability theory can be used to give precise results for such chaotic systems.

I am currently living in Trieste, Italy and am working both as part of the administration team of the IMM and as a tutor (you can reach me at d.coates@internationalmathematicsmaster.org). In the fall of 2019 I was fortunate enough to spend two months with the students in Lahore as a tutor. It was a wonderful experience being able to engage with such a fantastic group of students. I am really pleased to be working for the IMM and relish the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic programme.
